Mini-Vacations, V Day, and New Obsessions – Thoughts from February 16, 2025

Patti and I are back from our mini-vacation and we’re still working on the house. We’re down to painting and fixing some of the trim. It’s going to feel weird when we finish everything. The first day I don’t have to set the alarm to get up on my days off is going to be glorious. Just having yard work to do will seem like the easiest thing in the world. Of course, Patti will point out all the projects inside the house that I need to finish. We need to finish putting tiles on the cabinets, replace tiles in our kitchen, tiles in other areas, and finish the shower in our bedroom bathroom. I just remembered the carpet in our den needs replacing because of a leaking water heater. I’m sure there’s more that Patti can think of.

For Valentine’s Day, Patti and I stayed three nights at the newly renovated and renamed Pixar Place Hotel. As is our current custom, we booked the concierge level at the hotel. There is a lounge on the second floor that is open from morning to night with food, drinks, and Pixar-themed decorations everywhere. It wasn’t as nice as the concierge level that was just down the hall from our room at the Grand Californian across the street. Admittedly, that hotel was more expensive than this one. Our room was on the thirteenth floor, so we had to take the elevator down to the second floor to the concierge lounge.

Most of our days in the park came with clouds and rain. I had to buy a baseball cap to keep the rain away from my glasses. The rain kept many people away. It’s one of the few good things about the rain. The people who are there are in shops, in restaurants, or waiting in line for an indoor ride. Waiting inside seems more tolerable when you know there’s rain outside. We mainly shopped for more Disney stuff we don’t need. We spent the rest of our days back in the hotel.

Friday was Valentine’s Day, and we went to Benihana. We had a 5:30 pm reservation but didn’t get seated until after 7:00. The place was jam-packed with people. We got two seats by the bar, so we shared a giant bowl of a drink. The description said it was for two or more people. By the time we left the bar, we had finished it. We sat with a family with a well-behaved baby and another family with two young girls. The food was excellent, and Patti and I didn’t mind the crowds. If we’re together, we enjoy ourselves wherever we are. We got a picture of the event.

The cats were excited to see us when we got back to the house on Friday. It took us a while to bring all the stuff we got on vacation into the house. I didn’t get as much as I have in past vacations. My desire to bring more stuff into the house has decreased in recent years. I still have a giant trash bag filled with stuffed animals I have to room for in my office. When I get things these days, I get only small things. The biggest thing I got was an anime action figure. It was from My Hero Academia, which is a show I had heard of but never watched. I put the figure together while I was watching the series. The character I was building didn’t come into the series until the third season, though. Little did I know that this was the beginning of my obsession with the show.
