Restrooms, Dirty Cars, and Lessons on Lying – Thoughts from August 30 and September 3, 2023

And now for my favorite way to start a TfL paper. No, I didn’t have a stroke while typing. I’m trying out a shortened version of Thoughts from Life. Don’t worry. You probably won’t ever see it again. Oh yeah, I haven’t even told you what is my favorite way to start this thing you’re reading. Of course, I started the whole thing with the phrase “and now …” You’re used to missing information from me. I would say I’ve forgotten what I was going to say, but you’ve suffered enough. In the next paragraph, I’ll talk about restroom behavior.

I was in the restroom and doing my urinal thing and I could hear someone sniff in one stall. I heard nothing from them until they sniffed. This meant they were just sitting on the toilet being silent. My restroom philosophy is ABDS (always be doing something). If you can’t push out any more poop, wipe your butt and get out of there. I didn’t mention washing your hands, but that is implied. It’s understandable if you’re shy in the restroom. I still have a hard time peeing when someone is acting like a weirdo in the restroom. If you’re clearing your throat or sniffing, you obviously want to be heard or don’t care about being heard. You’re just sitting on the toilet doing nothing. Years ago, I had a coworker that would bring a magazine into the restroom with him. The modern version of that is people on their phones on the toilet. ABDS, you weirdos!

I need to clean out my car. I’m sure the amount of dust alone is adding to my constant sore throat. Wiping off the four by six-inch screen is something I do regularly, but that’s only because I can see the dust clearly. The dashboard and floors are full of untouched grossness. Everything needs to be vacuumed, scrubbed, and wiped. The outside of the car still needs a special power cleaning because it still has pyro debris on it. My only question is when to do it. We’ve had 100+ temperatures. If I do it too early, I’ll have to clean up my sweat while I’m cleaning.

Once again, I’m confused about religious thinkers. I’m listening to a book by Molly Shannon. She grew up Irish Catholic, but found out her dad was homosexual. He went through the usual denial about who he was to avoid ruining his life and the lives of his family. Admitting you’re homosexual in the Catholic Church is admitting to a clearly stated sin. Molly loves her dad and fully supported him. She is a good person, but not a good Catholic. If a group I was in discriminated against members of the group for being themselves, I would leave that group.

People think of their religion as if it is part of their heritage. Irish Catholics take it on as their identity. “I’m an Irish Catholic. You know how we are.” It is truly a coat they put on, so their family doesn’t disown them. Breaking the rules seems to be a regular part of every Catholic’s life. Molly’s rule breaking was stealing. They separate themselves from the laws of whatever country they are in with the rules of Catholicism. A priest can forgive you from any sin. They treat all sins equally. I’ve heard of young people who made up sins because they didn’t really have anything to confess. This teaches young people to lie at an early age. It doesn’t sound like an ethical lesson to me.
