Metaphors, Movies, and Dash-Cams – Thoughts from March 27 and 29, 2023

March 27, 2023

What can I say? My life is going swimmingly as long as that phrase means you are swimming in a giant ocean without land in sight. I’m not exactly drowning yet, but I would like to find a land I can call home someday. Treading water is good for your core, though. As a person who doesn’t like metaphors, I’m going to talk in real speak now. The land I’m looking for is in the land of Authorville. Great! Back to the metaphor again! Fine, I’m done with metaphors. Except, to say that I live in the land with J. K. Rowling, David Sedaris, and Samantha Irby. I promise to stay with the real speak in the next paragraph. Where have you heard that before?

I’m listening to a Lindy West book in which she points out the implausible and just plain wrong parts of movies. I haven’t seen most of the movies she talks about. It is extremely funny because she points out illogical plot points and other things that are shameful in the modern world. Most of them are blockbuster movies. I don’t see most blockbuster movies. They are full of car chases, explosions, sexist and homophobic behavior, and violence. Lindy is not a fan of these tropes either. It made me want to go through movies or other forms of media and give my reality accepting take on them. I would just point out all the reality denial I see in them. This is what I constantly do. I think of things I could do if I had time. I, of course, don’t have the time so on to the next paragraph.

Driving into work today, I was watching the constant bad behavior on the freeway. Someone did something so illogical and wrong that I wished I had a dash-cam. I’ve thought this before because I see stuff every day that proves that more people behave badly on the freeway than don’t. If I wanted to capture people behaving nicely, I would have to compile months of footage to make a one-minute compilation video. I could do it with the GoPro, but that would mean cords running all over my dashboard. I’m going to see if I can find something online that will work for me.

Looking up some dash-cams online, I realized I want one that looks forward and faces inside. If I comment on the other drivers, I want to capture them and me at the same time. I still question how I will connect it to power, but I can figure that out. The videos can capture the madness on the freeway without me having to do anything different in my driving. I would need some time to edit the video, but far less time than recreating the incidence with toy cars. Yes, that was an actual thought of mine.

I ordered a dash-cam. It should get to my house tomorrow. I still see issues with installing it, but I’ll deal with those things when they present themselves. I’m only half sure it will work for what I want to do. Getting the video to where I can edit it is my chief concern. If I can’t easily transfer the video files to my network drive, I will be less likely to do it. This is besides my worries about not having time to edit the videos. I’m compiling an enormous amount of videos on my computer. Hopefully, I can do something with them. I’m just compiling them for now. The future is that other guy’s problem.
