I was thinking today about making sitcom decisions. Sitcom decisions mainly use lies to avoid making actual decisions. Lying to your spouse about doing something you forgot to do is a sitcom decision. Characters make decisions in sitcoms purely for comedic purposes. Sitcoms have taught us dangerous and absurd life lessons that we shouldn’t be following. They are funny because they point out the comically stupid decisions people make when they’re trying to cover something up. The stupidity is trying to cover things up instead of dealing with their problems directly.
The real problem with the characters in sitcoms is they never learn from their failures. Every episode, they’re back making the same mistakes that didn’t work in past episodes. Characters change very little throughout individual episodes. If a character lies about drinking with his buddies after work, that will be an ongoing part of his character. He will simply find new ways to conceal what he’s doing and try not to get caught. Not surprisingly, he always gets caught in a hilariously compromising way. While this is humorous in a sitcom, this is not a good way to live your life. Lying to your spouse is a quirky part of a character’s personality, but this behavior will lead to an unhappy marriage or divorce in real life.

I took off from work yesterday because it was too rainy outside. It was raining heavily at my house and at work. Patti usually has a problem with me calling out, but she was glad I wouldn’t be on the wet freeways. I decided to accomplish something I don’t normally have time to do. I composed a query letter to send to agents in order to turn what you’re reading now into a series of books. Listening to David Sedaris books let me know that weird observations about life can entertain and sell. I just need to convince an agent that my weird observations can sell. I may have to remove some of the anti-religious stuff, but hopefully not. It’s part of who I am as a person. It’s part of the many realities I have accepted. I could only see taking it out because it’s not as entertaining as the silly and weird stuff.
I started adding tags to my Thoughts from Life articles and it seems to help with people following me and liking articles. This will help agents and publishers see there is interest in my weird thoughts. I’m sure part of the interest is in nostalgia by fellow nerds. Plenty of people have made their careers based on entertaining nerds. I hope I can be one of them. The tags are only part of what I’m doing to increase the traffic on the site, but it is taking a while to add the tags to my past entries. I’m tagging anything that people might be interested in. If I reference Comp USA, people who remember it will be interested in someone else talking about it.
