Rum Coffee for Breakfast – Thoughts from December 28, 2022

Continuing my last Thoughts paper, I will talk about the joy that was Christmas Day. I got up about 11:30 am and Patti got up just before me. The coffee machine was still making coffee. I wanted to mention one of Patti’s presents at that point (a new coffee machine), but I’m glad I didn’t because she couldn’t use it right away. It took a different filter from the old machine. Why didn’t the machine come with filters? Why didn’t I make sure we had the right filters? I’m not one to dwell on the past, so I’ll just leave those questions alone.

I did my usual stretching, accompanied by our cats Willow and Luna. Occasionally, Scout and Beatrix popped in and out of the festivities. Willow likes stretching because I move a therapy light around the floor with me. She likes to block the light with her furry body or knock it over so she can warm her belly. I have to keep moving the light so I can see it. When I stretch my legs on the floor, she likes to get right next to me and lick my hair. When she starts licking my skin, I have to stop her. Cat tongues are incompatible with human skin. As much of a distraction as they are, I wouldn’t have it any other way. They make stretching into a love fest.

After I stretched, Patti and I exchanged gifts. My gifts make it look like we have a child living with us. It’s a 52-year-old man, but the toys indicate a 10-year-old girl. The fur girls really enjoyed the pink hamster that ran around the floor and laughed like a pink hamster should. Patti’s gifts looked more like a grown woman was getting them. The coffee machine and a knife set were her main gifts. My main gift was a $100 gift card for Amazon. I also got a $20 Amazon gift card from the Christmas Eve gift exchange. The gift card remains unspent because I’m looking for something that will improve my life and allow me to create new things easily. I don’t think there’s something on Amazon that will do that for $120. If I don’t find the wonder product (because it doesn’t exist for $120), I’ll probably get a fancy pillow to help me sleep.

After the gifts, we had breakfast. Patti got me vegan eggs and sausages. I cooked the hash browns because I make excellent hash browns. The key is flipping them way more than most people do. I should mention at this point that I enhanced my coffee throughout the morning (okay, it was actually the afternoon) with Jamaican rum cream. Patti had her favorite breakfast alcohol. It might have been a mimosa but I think it was something else. I could ask her but that would ruin the mystery. Patti also made croissants. It differed completely from my normal breakfast. The sliced tomatoes were the closest to my regular breakfast foods. I was going to end this paragraph with the last sentence, but I realized I had said nothing about how good the food tasted. It tasted really good. Patti knows how hard it is to get me to express an opinion about food. Saying, “It tasted really good,” is more than you usually get from me.

After breakfast, I built a Lego penguin we got from our nephew and his wife. It has been a while since I built something so elaborate with Lego. I forgot how much I enjoy building something with Lego. The process was still enjoyable to this man over fifty. My inner child may have to deal with an older body than he’s used to, but he still gets to play every once in a while. I may have cats instead of kids, but I still have an inner child to play with. As soon as I typed that last sentence, I heard how it sounds. Hopefully, it entertained you as much as it did me.
