Negative Entertainment – Thoughts from March 21 and 27, 2022

March 21, 2022

If you think I’m going to be honest in these Thoughts papers, you must know me or am me. I don’t have an off switch to my honesty. The only difference between me and my overly honest grandma is I don’t consider my opinions as honest assessments of anything. My opinions are wrong most of the time, as are most opinions. If I say a movie sucks, it probably means they did not make it for me. You can’t equate disinterest with disgust. If something is not to your liking, move on.

When I look at myself in the mirror these days, I can only think of one word to describe what I see – unintimidating. That’s the look I’ve had all my life, but now my inside truly matches my outside. No one seems intimidated by my looks, intellect, or physical presence. My cats are always happy to see me and only avoid me if I accidentally step on their tail. I am the definition of even keeled. I’m not just bragging. It’s true.

Why do negative people think they’re entertaining? Negative entertainment just means something is not entertaining. Negative people may entertain other negative people, but not people who don’t share their negative views. Some people are at their happiest when other people are miserable. When comedians start focusing on negative things only, their careers die. George Carlin, Bill Cosby, and Rosie O’Donnell are a few that come to mind that got cynical and negative in their comedy as they aged. Bill Cosby had much more than just negativity going on, though. When you have negative opinions, they are bound to come out as negative comedy. When you cater to only negative audiences, you will soon have no audiences.

Trigger warning: Brian is about to talk about the restroom again. I was going to a unisex restroom because it is nicer than most other restrooms at work. I was going to use the toilet as a urinal and the seat was conveniently up. Another man had been in the restroom just before me. When I think about it, I know exactly who it probably was and this sexist behavior goes right along with his nasty attitude and lack of a smile most of the time. You literally have to reach around the seat to flush the toilet so it does not make logical or ethical sense not to put the seat down. This was a great example of illogical behavior always being unethical behavior.

I was told by a musician that I look like another musician she knows. Luckily, I still haven’t seen a picture of the musician. He will be less attractive than me or more attractive than me. Either way, it’s not usually a compliment. Looking like someone else is not an accomplishment. It’s like when celebrities are told they look more attractive in person. Apparently, cameras have been making them look uglier. How I look is far less important than my behavior, talents, and personality. “Who cares,” is what I want to say to hearing I look like someone else, but I never do.

I just heard an ad for the place I work on the radio. I pass billboards on the freeway for it, I see TV commercials for it, and I can mention where I work to anyone almost around the world and they have heard of it. Anytime I mention where I work to people, they say how fun it must be to work there. It is fun. There are people who complain about working here, but I get the impression those people wouldn’t be happy working anywhere. They are just not happy people. I’m a happy person partly because I work here. Back when I worked “real” jobs, I was unhappy so much that it was bad for my health. I’m healthier at work than I am at home on my days off.
